The role of socio-cultural, socioeconomic, and diversity factors and lifestyle choices in contemporary society for health promotion

Socio-cultural, socioeconomic, diversity factors and lifestyle choices in the contemporary society are very crucial in promotion of health. These factors affect the distribution of disease and the success of implementing health promotion interventions. The factors also affect behavior which is a prerequisite to promotion of health. The incorporation of hygienic practices and safer practices into daily life, taking part in disease screening, obtaining immunizations and vaccinations will help in promoting health.

Socio-cultural factors such as ethnicity or racial identity are relatively static, but they still affect the health promotion interventions. The effectiveness of the health promotion interventions is sometimes susceptible to the influence of socio-cultural assumptions between the health promotion intervention deliverers and the target group. The cultural beliefs about personal control, spirituality, the family role and patterns of communication contribute largely to health promotion and the outcome of the health promotion interventions. For example, when working with the society, their values can lead them not to engage in various activities especially when these activities are perceived to be of beneficial to an individual. For the health promotion intervention to be successful, it is necessary to ensure that personal fulfillment comes as a result of satisfying the group needs. This will eventually help in promotion of the health of the society at large (Helman, 2001).

The notion that those people low economic class, the ill or those with disabilities live in the rural and the underserved areas affect health promotion. Documental evidence by medical anthropologists indicates that those in the low socioeconomic class have differing beliefs, values and perceptions about health and how to manage health. For example, the physicians and patients from these areas sometimes belief in the causes of a certain illness such as diabetes but they differ when it comes to the goals, strategies and evaluation of the care. .............
