The role played by the health and safety executive in regulating business activity

            The Health and Safety Executive is a no-departmental public body in the United Kingdom. This body is charged with the role of regulation, encouragement and the enforcement of workplace health and safety welfare and also research into occupation risks in the United Kingdom. The principal statute that empowers the Health and Safety Executive is the health and safety at work ETC act of 1974 famously known as the 1974 act (Stranks, 2005, p.56). The HSE also advices the government on health and safety policy issues. The HSE through other establishments inspects and audits business premises, investigates complaints relating to safety, occupational health and welfare in businesses. The types of businesses that are involved in the health and safety enforcement include the following; retail, wholesale, offices, catering, hotels, residential care homes, and leisure and consumer services.
